Everyone has a different version of what are the best places to visit in Morocco Africa. The country is big and colorful, and there is a diversity of cultures and landscapes, unlike any other country I’ve been to. One thing you might not know about me other than I am French is that I am half Moroccan. After living in Paris and London for a few years, I’m now in Rome, but Morocco will always own my heart.
As such, I’m very excited to share some mainstream and secret places to visit in Morocco. That’s a piece of my culture and my heritage that I’m sharing with you. As such, you can understand pretty easily how passionate I am about each of those magical places in Morocco you’re about to discover.
Do you know the best place to buy carpets in Morocco? Or have you ever wondered what is the best place to go in Morocco with family? As with every place in the world, different cities in Morocco boast different personalities and characteristics. Those are those differences that make different cities perfect for all situations.
In this article, I will talk about all my favorite spots, from the best place in Morocco for couples to colorful places perfect for an Instagram moment. Without further ado, let’s visit Morocco together!
One of the top destinations in Morocco is the city of Fes. It is one of the oldest cities in the country. As such, its architecture and history seem to set it as the best place in Morocco for couples who want to discover a piece of history together.
I especially love the colorful walls and grounds; it feels like you’re in a huge house – except it’s outdoors. That’s why the Medina of Fes is is a UNESCO World Heritage City. It’s one of the most-visited parts of the city, and it’s also the best place to buy carpets in Morocco.
If the arts impress you, the historical buildings and the mosques are some of the parts of Fes you should definitely visit. The royal palace of Fes, built in the 13th century, is the Moroccan take on medieval architecture. However, if you don’t visit the Fes tanneries while you’re there, you’ll really have missed one of the most famous cultural sites of the city.
For sure, the best place to go in Morocco with family on a first trip is Casablanca. The whole city is a landmark of Morocco, especially due to the Hassan II mosque. This building shows how much detail Arabs put in architecture and in all kinds of arts where the Moroccan touch has been left to prosper for centuries.
However, it’s not all about mosques when you go to Casablanca as there is also so an amazing presence of Christianity and Judaism in the city. For instance, the Cathedral du Sacre Coeur is a jewel of architecture that you should absolutely visit.
As I am now living in Rome Italy, I have to admit I see many similarities between the architecture of the Casablanca in the old district – the Medina – and downtown Rome. However, Casablanca is a seaside town in Morocco, and you can walk down the seashore from the Hassan II mosque for a nice family outing.
Ait Ben Haddou is one of the best places to visit in Morocco if you are a movie lover and a history addict. It has become one of the most famous places in Morocco when it was used for background scenes in blockbuster movies. The Toaurirt Kasbah, like Ait Ben Haddou, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and both places attract thousands of tourists every year.
Ait Ben Haddou, with its fortified village, is definitely a sight in the High Atlas region. That’s also one of the cutest fairytale places in Morocco, if I may add. However, if you have watched Gladiator or Game of Thrones, then Ouarzazate is really the destination for you. All three places are very close by from each other. Still, it is Ouarzazate that is most famous since it carries the name Morocco’s Hollywood.
If you’re looking for the best place in Morocco for couples, then Merzouga is a romantic spot where you can rewrite the world while watching the stars. A lot of famous places in Morocco include spots to buy carpets, grilled meats, or Moroccan bread. However, there is so much more to Morocco most beautiful places!
I personally am big on living life like locals. In Merzouga, the Bedouin life is still going strong. What I love about the Moroccan way of living is how close to tradition, culture, and history we are. You can explore the desert by car or on a camel ride there, either on your own or with a tour guide. In any case, you’re bound to discover not only culture but also yourself.
If you’re looking for seaside places to visit in Morocco Africa, Essaouira is your next destination. Built on the shore of the Atlantic in colorful waves, Essaouira is one of those easy-going secret places to visit in Morocco. One of the things you should do in Essaouira visits the sea market and have fun at the beach. The Old Town is small and narrow, beautiful and lively. I promise you will want to stop at every shop to get artisan jewelry and street food.
That’s one of the best places to visit in Morocco whether you’re on your own, with friends, or with your other half. It’s also one of the coolest day trips you can have from Marrakech. There will be plenty of things to do in Essaouira! Indeed, if you love discovering new colorful souks and old towns, that’s a satisfying day trip.
Asilah might be the best place to buy carpets in Morocco but it’s definitely not famous only because of this. As with every Moroccan City, Asilah has a really beautiful Madina. The old part of the city carries countless paintings on its walls. It’s really amazing street art that attracts people from all around the world.
The seaside town is one of the best places in Morocco for couples, especially since the whiteness of the buildings makes it a romantic background. The souks, the street food and Moroccan sweets and cookies, and the summer Asilah festival are just a few of the colorful moments you’ll want to experience.
If you’ve ever been to Pompeii and loved it, pay a visit to Volubilis near Meknes. Meknes is a 9th century City that keeps attracting people from all around the world. It’s the best place to go in Morocco with family if you want to feel really immersed in the culture.
There are so many places to visit in Morocco Africa, however, the history that Volubilis carries is unlike that of any other city in the country. Volubilis is an ancient Roman Empire that looks very much like Pompeii, to be honest. The mosaics are still bright and dandy, and it’s overall a very well preserved place. If you’re looking for secret places to visit in Morocco, that’s one of the hidden gems that not many know about where you can marvel.
One of Morocco most beautiful places is Chefchaouen and this city really holds a special place in my heart. It’s all over Instagram. The Blue Pearl of Morocco is filled with blue old houses high up in the Moroccan mountains.
I don’t think there are many places that are so naturally Instagram-worthy, to be fair. Chefchaouen is also close to Rabat, Tangier, and Fez so you can have amazing day trips from there. Although it looks avant-garde and artistic, the city is a very local and traditional one.
I have to say that if you don’t eat a Couscous, a tagine or any of the amazing fish dishes that Chefchaouen offers, it would really be a shame. If you look from some angles, it kind of resembles Positano, only without the beach. It’s no wonder why Chefchaouen is one of the most famous places in Morocco if you think about it.
One of the secret places to visit in Morocco is the Yves Saint-Laurent Maison. I don’t know what is most famous: the house and its amazing mosaic interior of the Majorelle Garden, an exotic garden brought to life by 6 artists from all around the world. This is one of the best places to visit in Morocco Africa if you like to dream about what Paradise on Earth would be like.
The bluestone pieces, the palm trees, the detailed decoration in all of the villa, even the carefully chosen furniture -nothing has been left to chance. Built in 1923, the villa and its botanical garden were the residence of Yves Saint Laurent until the 50s. It’s one of the best places to visit in Morocco if you’re a fashion, art, and architecture lover. Inside, you can find two museums: the Berber Museum and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, both very much worth a visit.
Oh, Marrakesh – it’s more than the best place to buy carpets in Morocco. The colorful city is home to some of the most exciting souks, hammams, and colorful streets. One of Morocco most beautiful places, Marrakech to me sounds like food, flavors, and spices. There’s so much to see, from the Bahia Palace to the Jewish district, and the Ben Youssef Madrasa.
If Marrakech is so famous all around the world – as one of the most famous places in Morocco, there’s a reason for that. It is built between tradition and nature. If you see the sunset from the Koutoubia Mosque or the Menara Gardens, you’ll feel like you’re in another world. There’s a different feeling induced by being in Marrakesh, more than in any other Moroccan city. A feeling of immense beauty and belonging to the world.
From the best place to go in Morocco with family to the best place in Morocco for couples, you have it all here. I’ve put together my favorite towns in the country worth a visit. I love colorful places and how out-there yet delicate my culture is. There’s something for everyone in Morocco. Whether you’re an Instagram influencer or here to spend romantic moments walking along the beach with your partner, do yourself a favor.
Morocco definitely is a country for one that loves discovering the origins of humans and the soul that craves color. That’s why I am so attracted to Italy, as the old towns remind me so strongly of Morocco. However, I also love to discover old kinds of traditions as you can discover them in the 10 most beautiful cities to visit in France!
